A small wooden gesso mould carved with a classical scroll. This piece is carved in walnut and the carving is very deep. It would have been used for fancy gesso, or plasterwork, which would have been applied to picture frames or architectural details, such as friezes and ceilings. This dates from c.1820 and it is in good condition. There is just one small split in the wood which has not opened out much. This can be seen in the image.
