A large, heavy duty, 19th century, steel meat cleaver. This is made from cast steel and has a turned wooden handle with brass fittings. The turned handle has a lined design and the brass fitting, to the end of the handle, is in the shape of a pineapple. Although made for serious use, this piece is also very decorative. It dates from c.1880.
There is pitting to the steel, commensurate with age and use, and there is a crack down one side of the handle.
