Steel Sugar Axe

Steel Sugar Axe

Code: J21756

SOLD

An early 19th century, steel sugar axe with a hammerhead. The hammerhead was used initially for breaking the cone of sugar and then it was cut into smaller pieces using the axe. This is quite a simple example, probably French and dating from c.1830. It has a nicely turned wooden handle. There is pitting to the steel and there is filler between the shaft and the wooden handle where it has probably started to come apart in the past.

Dimensions: Length 31.5cm. Width 8.4cm. Diameter of handle 3cm.
