A huge, French copper measure. This was probably for measuring grain and it is marked on the side 'H.M.9.K 200. G'. The K and the G in the stamp are slightly raised so this could be 9 kilos 200 grams. It is made from a very heavy gauge of copper, has castellated seams and it dates from c.1840. To either side are simply formed, steel strap handles which indicate that its' purpose was originally functional rather than decorative even though it is now a good decorative lump of copper. There is some splitting to the wired rim around the base, there is denting and a small repair to the rim and there is slight marking to the copper. All of this is consistent with use.
