A Victorian copper mould, made by Benham’s. This design is known as the “Brunswick Star”. The Brunswick Star relates to the House of Hanover, whose heads became kings of Great Britain, and it is used to surround the Royal Cypher on the badges of almost all of the police and fire services in England and Wales. This example is very well marked, with the orb and cross symbol used by Benhams and also a registered design mark “REGISTERED SEPTEMBER 15.1864”. It date s from c.1870 and is in very good condition. There are just a couple of tiny dents on the lower rim.
