A lovely quality, 19th century, black marble mortar with a beechwood pestle. Marble of this colour is referred to as black even though, due to the dark brownish, grey flecking, it appears overall as dark grey. This example has wonderful depth of colour. It is probably from Southern France or Northern Italy and it dates from c.1820. The pestle is turned from beechwood and dates from c.1850. There is very slight chipping to the rim of the mortar, consistent with use, but generally it is in very good condition. There is chipping to the finial of the pestle and a small area on the side has been filled.
Dimensions: Mortar: Width 25.3cm. Height 14.4cm. Pestle: Length 25.8cm. Diameter 4.5cm.
