A huge, free standing, turned wood mortar and pestle. This is certainly not one for the counter top as the mortar is 70cm. high by 32.5cm. diameter and the pestle is 59cm. long by 9cm. diameter. Both the pestle and mortar are turned from elm. They originate from the border regions of France and Switzerland and date from c.1820. This would make a fabulous feature in a large kitchen.
There is some cracking to the mortar but it is tight and the cracks have not opened. There is some scratching to the wood and also some discolouration which has results in a few black patches. There is splitting to the pestle. All of this can be seen in the images.
