Red marble mortar with boxwood pestle

Red marble mortar with boxwood pestle

Code: F19277

A fabulous coloured, early nineteenth century marble mortar with a boxwood pestle. This mortar is carved from a beautiful red marble, which probably originates from Italy, and the pestle is turned from boxwood. It dates from c.1820. There are chips on two of the lobes on the mortar but this does not detract from the appearance, it just adds to the character of the piece. There is also wear, and slight cracking, to the pestle which has a lovely rich patina.

The mortar measures 24.5cm across by 13.4cm high and the pestle is 28cm. long by 4.5cm diameter.
