A beautiful, 18th century, dark red marble mortar with a fruitwood pestle. This mortar is a very dark red with black veining which gives even more depth to the colour. It is Italian and dates from c.1780. Unfortunately it has not had an easy life. There is a chunk missing from one of the lobes and there is further chipping to the rim which can be seen in the images. It can, however, still be used. The pestle, which is turned from a fruitwood, is a delightful shape. It is in excellent condition.
Dimensions: Mortar: Width 27.4cm. Height 16cm. Pestle: Length 26.3cm. Diameter 5.2cm.
