American "Geneva Fluter"

Code: K23196

SOLD

An unusual, American, cast iron crimping iron or fluter. This would have been used for putting fine pleats into fabrics such as collars and cuffs. The roller is marked in the casting “GENEVA FLUTER” and on the handle “GENEVA ILL.” and the flat base is marked “HEAT  THIS PAT’D 1866”. This was made by W.H. Howell Co of Geneva Illinois. The base would have been heated on the stove, the washed and starched fabric then laid across it, and rolled with the roller to form the pleats. It dates from c.1870 and is in very good condition.
