French, copper & steel felt iron

A  small, French, steel and copper lace, or felt, iron. This type of iron was used for making lace or felt decorations for hats. The fabric was washed and starched and then laid across the copper section. The steel section, which would have been heated, was then placed into the copper section and the fabric would be trimmed, leaving an attractive leaf form. The design in this piece is very well detailed and it dates from c.1920. The handle is turned from a hardwood and the piece is in excellent condition.
