An interesting steel cheese taster with a brass and bakelite handle. The brass section of the handle is stamped “HERBERT & SONS LTD LONDON E.C.” This company was originally established in the 18th century and they were renowned for making penknives and scales but they also made many other top quality, utility items. This piece would have been used for taking a sample from a whole cheese to test whether it was well enough matured. It dates from c.1920 and is in excellent condition.
