A Victorian, sycamore cheese board. This is turned, in the same way as the bread boards of the period but it is unusual in that it is carved with “Cheese”, in a fancy script, on the face of the board rather than in the border. In the centre of the board there was a hole, which may have been drilled in order to attach a handle, but this has now been filled. There is some staining to the board and there are also woodworm holes to the face and the reverse. These have also been filled and treated so the worm is no longer active.
