A brass and steel milliners iron dating from c.1880. This type of iron was used for making flower or leaf shapes, out of felt or lace, for decorating hats. The fabric was washed, starched and then laid into the brass section. The steel section was heated and then pressed into the brass former and the fabric would be trimmed to form the outer shape of the leaf. This example is an extremely well detailed holly leaf and the wooden handle has a lovely patina. The iron is in excellent condition.
