19th century French charcoal iron

A large, and very heavy, cast iron charcoal iron with a wooden handle. This is marked, in the casting to the top, ‘JAY VOLTAIRE 147 BOUL BTE S.G.D.G 4 PARIS’  and it dates from c.1890. This is an unusual model, one that we have not seen before. There is a small catch on the front which allows you to open the top. Inside there is a grid in the base and the charcoal is put inside the iron, onto this grid. The iron is in very good condition and could still be used, if you had the inclination and the strength.
