A large, brass and steel milliners iron in the shape of a sunflower. This type of iron was used for making shapes out of felt or lace as ornamentation for hats. The fabric was washed and starched and put into the brass section. The steel iron was heated and then pushed into the brass section. The fabric would then be trimmed and the result was a beautifully shaped hat decoration.
This iron is very well detailed and it is in very good condition. The only fault is that the metal collar from the top of the wooden handle is missing. The iron dates from c.1880.
