A brass and steel, milliner’s iron in the shape of a sunflower. This type of iron was used for making felt or lace decorations for hats. The fabric was starched and the steel section of the iron was heated. The fabric was then laid across the brass section and the steel former was applied. This would then be left for a short time to cool and set and the edge of the flower would be trimmed. This one is very well made, with excellent detail, and it dates from c.1910. It is in excellent condition.
