A very unusual, small, cast iron flat iron with a detachable handle. This is French and it dates from c.1860. The detachable handle has beautifully made, brass fittings and a turned wood handle. In order to remove the handle you have to turn the brass, key type fitting which is part way up the handle and, when in use, this would have become very hot. So it is quite likely that the design was found to be quite impractical and very few would have been made, hence the rarity. It is in very good condition, with just slight wear to the wooden handle and a little pitting to the cast iron.
