A most unusual, Victorian copper kettle with an engraved message. This is a really good quality piece, well made, from a heavy gauge of copper, and with castellated seams. It is marked, to the base, with the monogram 'W S & S', which was used by the Birmingham manufacturers William Soutter and Sons, and it dates from c.1880. The company became limited in 1896 and closed down in 1928. The kettle has a very attractively shaped brass handle and finial but what makes it even more unusual is the engraved inscription around the shoulder which reads 'Best wishes to both'. This was probably a special order and would have been given as a wedding gift. It is in excellent condition and the tinning, to the interior, is still good so it could be used.
