A nineteenth century, French copper skimmer. These were used for skimming jams and preserves. This example is made from a heavy gauge of copper and it has a turned end to the handle, which is shaped like a shepherd’s crook, so that it can hang. It dates from c.1880 and it is in excellent condition.
