An antique, French copper, rectangular casserole and cover dating from c.1870. There are no manufacturers marks but the pan is marked with a number '32' to one end and the lid is marked with a number '3'. The 32 relates to the internal length of the pan in centimetres. In large kitchens there were often a number of similar items so each one would have been numbered in its size order within the kitchen, hence the number '5' on the lid. This piece has ornate brass handles to either end and also to the lid, which are typically French in shape. It is well made, from an exceptionally heavy gauge of copper, and it has castellated seams around the base and up the side. It is in excellent condition. Although we have not had the interior of this casserole re-tinned it is still in very good, usable condition.
Dimensions of pan: Length 32.7cm. (12 7/8 in) Width 18.4cm. (7 1/4 in) Height 17.2cm. (6 3/4in).
Total dimensions including the handles: Length 43.8cm. (17 1/4in) Height 19cm. (7 1/2 in).
