A large basalt bowl with an inverted rim. This piece is marked 'WEDGWOOD' and it is also marked with an impressed letter 'E'. It dates from c.1860. This bowl is simple in form and perfectly plain, with no relief, or other decoration. This shape of bowl was sometimes sold, by Wedgwood, with a female figure of Aphrodite or an animal figure of a heron, to sit in it. These figures had pierced bases into which you would place flowers in the centre of the bowl of water. The bowls were also sold as an independent item. This one is in excellent condition.
