A most unusual, large, Wedgwood, black basalt box and cover. In form this is like a circular trinket box but we have never seen one in this size before. It measures 19.5cm. diameter by 9.5cm. high. It is marked “WEDGWOOD” and dates from c.1850. There are also a couple of small, impressed, workman’s marks. The cover is sprig decorated with a classical figure bouncing Cupid on her foot and this is surrounded by a border of flowers and foliage. The sides of the box are decorated with six different classical subjects including, “The Cupid Seller”, which are divided by anthemion. All of the reliefs are good quality and the box and cover are in excellent condition.
