A small, Wedgwood basalt trumpet vase and liner. This piece is marked 'WEDGWOOD MADE IN ENGLAND' and it dates from c.1920. It also has an impressed number '4' which relates to the size, and a letter 'B' which would be the workman's mark. This is a particularly small size for this type of vase. It is relief decorated with a continuous band of classical figures and trees. Above this is a band of flowers and to the base is a band of grapes and vines. The piece has a pierced liner, or 'frog', which supports the boughs of flowers, hence these were known as bough pots. There is a small crack between one of the holes and the outer edge of the liner but the vase is in excellent condition.
