A good quality, oval, Wedgwood, dark blue, jasper dip, match box. This shape of box was made either for matches or as a trinket box. This one has a rough section on the underside of the lid and this was for striking the matches. It also has two indentations in the lid into which you could put the burning matches. It is marked 'WEDGWOOD' and it dates from c.1860. There is also a large, impressed letter 'N'. It is decorated with flowers and anthemion to the side of the box and there is a large relief, after a design by Lady Templeton, to the lid. The reliefs are all very well detailed and the jasper dip is a good, rich shade of blue. Both the box and cover are in excellent condition.
