Code: L24533
A rare, 18th century, Wedgwood, three colour, jasper dip pyrophorus vase. This is marked “WEDGWOOD” and it dates from c.1790. It is also impressed with a large letter “A” which would be a workman’s mark. The combination of primrose yellow and blue, which is quite delightful, was quite uncommon, especially in the 18th century. The jasper is smooth and the reliefs are super quality. The vase is rare in that so few of these items still exist. The pyrophorus vase was an early form of fire lighter. Chemicals were combined in it, and these ignited, so frequently the vases were damaged by the ignition. Considering its’ purpose this vase has survived in very good condition. There would have been a small collar on one of the holes in the top but this is now missing, and the lid, from the centre, is also missing. There is also a tiny piece missing from the top of one of the long blue leaves. Other than this it is in good condition, with no cracks or restoration, and remarkably, the very fine handles have survived in tact.
