A superb quality, 18th century, Wedgwood black basalt sucriere with encaustic decoration. This has a very tiny, impressed “WEDGWOOD” mark and it dates from c.1790. The basalt body is very finely potted and it is painted with bands of a classical border design in red and white matt enamels. This type of decoration was known as encaustic painting and was in imitation of the Ancient Greek pottery. This is a fabulous example and it is in excellent condition.
