Boxwood mould carved with ivy border

Code: H21006

SOLD

An early 19th century, carved wooden gesso or sugar mould. This is carved, in boxwood, with a fabulous ivy border on a stipple ground. It is also carved with the initials “F S W” and these would be the initials of the carver. The end is marked with the number ’53’. Boxwood has a hard, fine grain which lends itself well to carving and the detail in this mould is extremely good. This type of mould was used for moulding gesso for decorative plasterwork but they were also used for moulding sugar. This particular mould could have been used for either.

English. Date: c.1820

It is in excellent condition with just a couple of historic woodworm holes. The wood has a lovely colour and patina.
