Wooden Butter Mould Carved with a Sturgeon

Code: K23071

£365.00 Approx $456.25, €426.4

A rare, early 19th century, two part butter mould carved with a sturgeon, the royal fish. Sturgeons are often confused with dolphins but sturgeons have scales whereas dolphins don’t. This is very well carved, in sycamore, and would turn out a three dimensional form. It is English and it dates from c.1820. Originally there would have been two wooden pegs which would have located in the holes, to hold the mould together when in use but these are now missing. There are a lot of wood worm holes which have been treated and are now filled, and also a split to the reverse of one side of the mould which has also been filled. The wood has a lovely, honey coloured patina.

Dimensions when together: Length 12.2cm. Width 6.5cm. Height 10.6cm.
