A Wedgwood basalt spill vase with relief decoration. Spill vases were used for keeping 'spills' which were long, thin pieces of wood for lighting the fire. They were usually kept on the mantlepiece. This vase is marked ‘WEDGWOOD’ and it dates from  c.1880. There is also an impressed number ‘6’ or '9', depending on which way up you look at it, and a couple of other small tool marks. It is decorated with two of the Muses standing between trees. To the rim is a border of scrolling flowers.  The reliefs are all well detailed and the vase is in excellent condition.
