Pair of plaques 'Night and Day'

SOLD

Code: F18716

A fine pair of Wedgwood black basalt plaques in their original gilt frames. Both plaques are marked 'WEDGWOOD' and one also has an impressed letter 'O'. They date from c.1860 and the attractive gilt frames are contemporary to the plaques. The subjects both show Venus and Cupid, one representing 'Day' and the other 'Night'. They are both very good quality. The moulding is finely detailed and the reliefs are undercut, a technique which was not used to often in this period and was confined to quality pieces due to the labour involved. Both plaques are in excellent condition but there is slight damage to one of the frames. This can be seen in the image.
The plaques are 16.5cm high by 12.8cm. wide. With the frames they are 18.8cm by 14.8cm.
Price includes postage within the U.K.  Western Europe and the U.S.A.
