Small marble mortar & boxwood pestle

Code: F18889

A small, early 19th century, pale grey marble mortar with a double ended, boxwood pestle. This is a very useful, small size, which would be ideal for crushing spices. The mortar is 18.6cm. long by 17.2cm wide by 8cm. high and the postal is 18.5cm. long. It dates from c.1820. The shape of the mortar is quite unusual as it has pouring lips on two of the corners. The marble is a very pale grey with slightly darker veins and the pestle is turned in boxwood and has a lovely rich, honey coloured patina. There is a small crack in the marble, on the rim close to one of the lobes, but other than this both the mortar and pestle are in very good condition.
