A French, steel and brass lace, or felt, iron. This type of iron was used for making lace or felt decorations for hats. The fabric was washed and starched and then laid across the brass section. The steel section, which would have been heated, was then placed into the brass section and the fabric would be trimmed, leaving an attractive leaf form. The design in this piece is very well detailed and it dates from c.1920. The back of the iron is marked with the number '158'. The handle is turned from a hardwood and there is a slight scorching to the end of the handle closest to the steel. Other than that the piece is in excellent condition.
