A French, steel and brass lace, or felt, iron. This type of iron was used for making lace or felt decorations for hats. The fabric was washed and starched and then laid across the brass section. The steel section, which would have been heated, was then placed into the brass section and the fabric would be trimmed, leaving an attractive leaf form. The design in this piece is very well detailed and it dates from c.1920. The handle is turned from a hardwood. There are three small marks on the brass collar, where the wooden handle is attached to the steel. Other than that the piece is in excellent condition.
