An interesting wooden butter moulding box. This was for moulding a slab of butter and impressing a design into the top. It is probably English and it is made from a combination of woods. The hinged box is made from beechwood. The print is also carved in beechwood but the handle is turned from a fruitwood. The print is well carved, albeit in a primitive style, with a cow standing beneath a large flower. This is typical of the carving on many of the English butter prints of the 19th century. This dates from c.1860. There is slight woodworm damage but this has now been treated. There is also slight cracking to the print where the wood has dried out over the years. Other than this it is in very good condition.
