An interesting, 18th century, Scandinavian carved wooden mangling board. These boards were used to wring the water out of clothes which had been washed. The clothes were wound around a roller and then run up and down the board. This example is Norwegian and it is probably carved from birch. It is carved with geometric designs. The side of the board is carved with the year in which it was made, 'ANNO 1776' and also the initials 'LO D'. These would probably be the initials of the carver. The boards were carved by the man of the house and they also had a secondary purpose of being decorative items to hang on the wall.
