A lovely quality, 19th century, English copper straining spoon. This is made from a very heavy gauge of copper and it has a turned end, shaped like a shepherds’ crook, so that it can hang. The nicely shaped handle is engraved with the initials ‘D.B.O.’.  These would have been the initials of the original owner. The pierced spoon would have been used for skimming the scum from the top of the jams etc. when making preserves. The bowl of the spoon is slightly misshapen from use but otherwise it is in very good condition. It dates from c.1860.
