An attractive, Nailsea, red glass rolling pin.
The Nailsea glassworks, which was situated 8 miles from Bristol, was established in the early 1700’s and closed in 1870. In its’ heyday it was the fourth largest glass producer in the U.K. It was known for producing some very beautiful, multi coloured glass and sometimes this was in unusual forms which were both decorative and functional.
This rolling pin, in a deep burgundy red, is typical of the style of the Nailsea designs. It is hollow so that it could be filled with water. The cold water aids the rolling of the pastry. It is said that cold hands make the best pastry.
