Oxford butter print

SOLD

Code: G20232

An Oxford butter print carved with the emblems of Scotland, England and Ireland. An Oxford butter print is the name given to this type which has a hole pierced right down the middle. This was for the disgusting habit of blowing down, from the handle, which helped to release the butter. This beautiful example is very well carved, in sycamore, with a thistle, a rose and shamrocks, and it dates from c.1830. The carving is deep and well detailed. The wood is now incredibly light in weight as it has dried out over the centuries. There is some evidence of old wood worm damage on the reverse but this has been treated and does not affect the look of the print. Other than that it is in very good condition.

Dimensions: Diameter 11cm. Depth 7.2cm.
