An early 19th century, carved wooden gesso or sugar mould. This is carved, in boxwood, with a simple leaf and berry border. The end is carved with the number ’132’. Boxwood has a hard, fine grain which lends itself well to carving and the design in this mould is very deeply carved. This type of mould was used for moulding gesso for decorative plasterwork but they were also used for moulding sugar. This particular mould could have been used for either.
