18th Century, Manganese Delft Tile

One from an interesting collection of 18th century Delft tiles depicting men on horseback. Each tile is 5 inch (or 12.7cm.) square and is hand painted in manganese. They are Dutch and date from c.1760.

This example: Gentleman wearing hat and cloak, on walking horse.

Condition: Chipping to two corners and right hand side. Also recesses in glaze to either side of man’s head, from the manufacture.
