Cast Iron Grocer's Scales

SOLD

Code: J21615

An attractive set of Victorian, cast iron grocers scales with a ceramic plate. These have their original green, red and gilt paint and the date from c.1880. They were made by Fairbanks of Birmingham and the name of the company is painted onto one side of the scales. The other side reads “TO WEIGH 7LBS”. The pottery scale plate is transfer printed, in black with “JUSTITIA VIRTUTUM REGINA” above Lady Justice holding a set of scales. This translates as 'justice is queen of virtues'. There is wear to the paintwork, as one would expect, but they are in very good, usable condition. They are being sold complete with weights, a small set of Avery brass weights from 1/2 oz up to 8 oz, and cast iron weights from 4 oz up to 2 lb.
