A very unusual late 18th/early 19th century marble mortar with a wooden pestle. The shape of this mortar is most unusual as it almost has a lean towards the pouring lip. It is an interesting beige colour with a red vein and this is sometimes known as blood vein marble. The simply shaped pestle is carved from boxwood. It dates from c1800. There is a crack in the mortar, to the side opposite the pouring lip, and the pestle was also split and this has now been filled. This is a very beautiful and decorative piece.
Dimensions: Mortar: Height 12.8cm. Width 19cm. Pestle: Length 21cm. Diameter 3.5cm.
