A large, 19th century, French copper dish for cooking snails. This is made from a heavy gauge of copper and it dates from c.1840. Each small domed indentation would have taken a snail, much like those we still use today, and this tray would take 24 snails. There is a brased join down the centre of the dish and this is from where it has been made in two pieces. The rim is rolled and there is a small brass loop attached for hanging. There are a couple of splits in the rim and there is also a hole in one of the snail compartments but this is a very decorative piece and quite a talking point as they are rarely seen in copper.
Dimensions: Diameter 32.4cm. Depth 2cm.
