Unusual, French Butter Roller

SOLD

Code: J21812

A very unusual, early nineteenth century, French butter roller. This would have been used for imprinting a design onto a large block of butter. It is carved in boxwood, has steel fittings, and it dates from c.1820. The roller is beautifully carved  with flowers, hearts, vases and the word “AMITIE” which means friendship. The carving is very skilful in that it is not only carved into the roller but it is also raised. The handle is a strange shape but it fits well into the hand for use. There is some cracking to the wood in both the roller and the handle. This is due to the wood drying out over the centuries. Otherwise it is in good condition.

Dimensions: Length 31cm. Width 12.6cm. Diameter of roller 6cm.
