A nineteenth century, steel and brass milliners iron. This type of iron was used for making decorations for hats in lace or felt. The fabric was washed and starched and put into the brass section. The steel iron was heated and then put onto the fabric and pushed into the brass section. The edge would then be trimmed leaving you with the flower or leaf shape. This example is in the shape of a pansy. It dates from c.1880 and it is in excellent condition.
