Pottery Jug by David Johnston of Bordeaux

A lovely quality, large, 19th century, French pottery jug covered in a blue transfer print. This has a blue transfer printed mark which reads “DAVID JOHNSTON BORDEAUX IMPORTATION ANGLAIS” and it also has an impressed mark “DAVID JOHNSTON BORDEAUX” around “32 B”. David Johnston was an Irishman with a love of English pottery. He took over a pottery in Bordeaux in the early 1830’s and was consequently taken over in 1845. He produced imitations of many different styles of English pottery and porcelain. This piece is really attractive, with an all over floral print on the elaborately shaped jug. It dates from c.1835 and is in excellent condition.
